Guide for Gulf residents

Driving to Umrah from the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain or Oman

Quick answer

Many families in the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman drive their own car to Umrah. Plan the route, the Miqat you will pass and where you will park in Makkah before you leave. Marhaba Haji does not drive across the border, but once you are in Saudi Arabia we can take over the driving you would rather not do: Makkah to Madinah, ziyarah tours, the Taif day trip, or an airport drop for anyone flying home. Those legs have published per-vehicle rates below.

Before you leave

Rules for crossing the border by car — documents, vehicle papers and insurance — can change. Check them on the official government and border websites for your country and for Saudi Arabia shortly before you travel, and make sure your Umrah visa or residency allows the trip.

The drive is long. Share the driving if you can, plan rest stops and avoid arriving tired in Makkah traffic.

Where you enter Ihram

Your Miqat depends on the road you take into Makkah. Travellers coming through Riyadh pass Qarn al-Manazil, at As-Sayl al-Kabir or at Wadi Muharram on the Al Hada road through Taif. If you visit Madinah first, you enter Ihram at Dhul Hulayfah when you leave Madinah. Use our Miqat calculator for your route and ask your scholar if you are unsure.

Parking and getting around in Makkah

Driving close to the Haram is restricted and parking is hard at busy times. Many families park at their hotel or outside the central area and stop driving until they leave. Ask your hotel about parking before you book.

If you would rather not drive between the holy cities, leave your car and let us take you from Makkah to Madinah, on ziyarah, or up to Taif. Rates for these legs are shown on this page.
