In short

About 2 hours 15 minutes between Makkah and Madinah, according to Saudi Arabia Railways (2026). Makkah to Jeddah's King Abdulaziz airport takes about 50 minutes, and Madinah to the airport about 1 hour 45 minutes. Some services skip stations, so check the timetable.

Journey times (Saudi Arabia Railways, 2026, approximate)

  • Makkah ↔ Madinah: about 2 h 15 min.
  • Makkah ↔ King Abdulaziz International Airport (Jeddah): about 50 min.
  • Madinah ↔ the airport: about 1 h 45 min.

Stations: Makkah, Jeddah (Al-Sulaimaniyah), King Abdulaziz International Airport, King Abdullah Economic City and Madinah. Not every train stops at every station.

Plan for the whole door-to-door time

  • The stations are not next to the mosques: add a taxi or car from the station to your hotel at each end.
  • Arrive at the station early, especially with luggage, elderly parents or in Ramadan.
  • Book in advance on the official channels; peak days sell out.
  • Check the luggage allowance before you travel.

Train or car? The train is faster on the main stretch; a private car goes door to door, which can be easier with elderly parents and lots of luggage.
