Is there public transport inside Makkah?

Asked by Anonymous pilgrim23 Oct 2026Transport

In short

Yes. The Makkah Bus network — 12 routes, about 400 buses and 431 stations as of January 2026 — links many neighbourhoods with the Haram area. Taxis and ride-hailing are also available. Around Jumu'ah, Ramadan and Hajj, roads near the Haram close and journeys take longer.

Makkah Bus

  • Run by the General Transport Center under the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites.
  • 12 routes, around 400 buses and 431 stations (January 2026).
  • Useful from districts further out, such as Aziziyah, towards the Haram area.
  • Check route maps and stops near your hotel before you rely on it.

Taxis

  • Widely available; agree the fare or use a metered taxi.
  • Near the Haram, vehicles can't always reach the mosque — expect to walk the last part.

Hotel shuttles

  • Some hotels further out run their own shuttles; schedules vary.

Busy periods: around Friday prayers, in Ramadan and in the Hajj season, road closures and crowds slow every option. Build in extra time and keep a fixed meeting point.
