What does 'walking distance to the Haram' really mean for Makkah hotels?

One hotel says 300 m, another says 500 m. How do I compare them for my mother?

In short

Listed distances are usually measured in a straight line to the mosque complex, not along the real walking route to a usable gate. For elderly pilgrims, ask for the walking route, slopes, tunnels, and how long the lift queue is at prayer times — those decide the real effort.

Why listed distances mislead

  • They are often straight-line figures, while the walk follows roads, tunnels and pedestrian routes.
  • They may be measured to the edge of the Haram complex, not to a gate that is open and leads where you want to pray.
  • In tower hotels, lift queues after prayers can add more time than the walk itself.
  • Some routes include slopes or long tunnels that are hard for elderly pilgrims.

What to ask before booking

  1. Which gate is closest, and what is the walking route to it?
  2. Is the route flat? Are there steps, slopes or tunnels?
  3. How long is the lift wait after Fajr and after Jumu'ah?
  4. Can a wheelchair go door to door?

Our approach: we prefer to tell families what we have seen on the ground for a specific hotel rather than quote a number. If we haven't verified a route recently, we say so.

Next step: read our guide to Makkah hotels for elderly and wheelchair users, or send us the hotels you're comparing.
