In short

A typical Makkah ziyarat tour visits Jabal al-Nour (the mountain of the Cave of Hira), Jabal Thawr, the sites of Hajj — Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat with Jabal al-Rahmah — and often Masjid Aisha at Tan'im and the Jannat al-Mu'alla cemetery. Ziyarat is not part of Umrah.

Commonly visited places

  • Jabal al-Nour — the mountain where the Cave of Hira is, where the first revelation came. The Hira Cultural District now sits at its foot.
  • Jabal Thawr — the mountain of the cave where the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr sheltered during the Hijrah.
  • Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat — the sites of Hajj, including Jabal al-Rahmah at Arafat. Outside the Hajj season they are quiet.
  • Masjid Aisha (Tan'im) — the mosque at the nearest boundary of the Haram, where many pilgrims enter ihram for an additional Umrah.
  • Jannat al-Mu'alla — the historic cemetery of Makkah.

Good to know

  • Ziyarat is a visit to historic places; it isn't a rite of Umrah.
  • Tours usually take a few hours; go early in the day in hot months.
  • Climbing to the Cave of Hira is steep — not suitable for everyone.
