How early should we go to the Haram for Taraweeh?

We want to pray Taraweeh inside the mosque, not on the street. When should we leave the hotel?

In short

Earlier than you think. In Ramadan the Haram fills well before Isha, and in the last ten nights many pilgrims stay from Maghrib or even earlier. Leave with enough time to find a place, carry water, and know which gates and areas are open for men and for women.

Practical tips

  • Pray Maghrib in the Haram and stay for Isha and Taraweeh if you can.
  • Carry a small bottle of water and anything you need for a long wait.
  • Agree a meeting point with your family; phones can be hard to use in the crowds.
  • Some gates and areas close when full; follow the staff's directions.

The last ten nights

  • The Haram is at its fullest, especially on the odd nights; streets around it are used for prayer.
  • A hotel a short walk away lets you go back to rest between Taraweeh and Tahajjud.

Next step: see hotels close to the Haram for the last ten nights.
