How much cash or gold can I carry into Saudi Arabia without declaring it?

Asked by Anonymous pilgrim23 Oct 2026Saudi visa & travel rules

In short

As of October 2026, you must declare cash, gold, precious metals, gemstones or jewellery worth SAR 40,000 or more when entering or leaving Saudi Arabia. The limit was lowered from SAR 60,000 in mid-2026. Declaring is not a ban — it's a form.

The rule (Saudi customs, ZATCA)

  • Declare if you carry SAR 40,000 or more in total of: cash (any currency), bearer negotiable instruments such as cheques, gold bars, precious metals, gemstones or jewellery.
  • It applies to arrival and departure, by air, land or sea.
  • Declaring is done through ZATCA's traveller declaration (online or at the port). Carry purchase invoices for valuable jewellery or gold.

Why it matters

  • Undeclared amounts above the limit can be confiscated, and customs can hold suspicious amounts for investigation even below the limit.
  • Older articles still quote SAR 60,000 — that figure is out of date.

Practical advice for Indian pilgrims

  • Most pilgrims don't need large amounts of cash: cards and forex cards work widely in Makkah and Madinah.
  • Indian rules on carrying foreign currency out of India apply separately; check with your bank or forex provider.
