What is the TCS on my Umrah package, and do I get it back?

In short

TCS (tax collected at source) is collected by the tour operator on overseas tour packages and deposited against your PAN. It is not an extra cost: you claim it as a credit when you file your income-tax return. Union Budget 2026-27 proposed a flat 2% rate on overseas tour packages.

What TCS is

  • When you buy an overseas tour package (which an Umrah package usually is), Indian law requires the seller to collect tax at source and deposit it with the government against your PAN.
  • It shows in your Form 26AS / AIS.

Do you get it back?

  • Yes, as a credit when you file your income-tax return: it reduces the tax you owe, or is refunded if you've paid more tax than due.
  • If you don't file returns, you'll need to file one to claim it — ask a chartered accountant.

The rate

  • Union Budget 2026-27 proposed collecting TCS on overseas tour packages at a flat 2%, irrespective of the amount (earlier rates were 5% and 20% above a threshold).
  • Your invoice should show the TCS amount and rate actually applied.

Tips

  • Make sure the operator has your correct PAN; otherwise higher rates can apply.
  • Keep the invoice and TCS certificate for your tax filing.

This is general information; your chartered accountant can advise on your own return.
