How do we plan Umrah for parents who walk slowly?

Asked by Anonymous pilgrim23 Oct 2026Elderly & family travel

In short

Choose a hotel with a short, flat walk; start in Madinah to settle in; use wheelchairs or carts for tawaf and sa'i; perform Umrah at quieter hours; and build rest days between big efforts. Keep medicines, documents and water with someone at all times.

Before you book

  • A doctor's check-up and a written summary of conditions and medicines.
  • Vaccines: meningitis for everyone; COVID-19 proof for over-65s.
  • Controlled medicines need Saudi clearance in advance.

Choosing hotels and dates

  • Short, flat walks matter more than star ratings. Ask about lift waits at prayer times.
  • Avoid the busiest periods (Ramadan's last ten nights, school holidays) if you can.
  • Madinah first gives time to adjust before Umrah.

On the day of Umrah

  • Rest after arrival; book the Nusuk Umrah slot for when they'll feel fresh.
  • Wheelchair or electric cart for tawaf and sa'i; upper floors are calmer.
  • Carry water, a light snack and medicines; plan toilet stops.

Every day

  • Midday heat: stay indoors; go to the mosque early.
  • One family member is always with each parent; agree meeting points.
