Can we take a baby pram into the Grand Mosque in Makkah?

In short

Not onto the ground floor of the Mataf around the Kaaba. Under the rule announced in 2024, prams may be used on the upper floors and in the Mas'a (sa'i area), but can be refused when those areas are crowded. A baby carrier is often easier.

The rule we know of

  • Ground floor of the Mataf: prams not allowed. (That floor is also reserved for pilgrims performing Umrah.)
  • Upper floors and the Mas'a: prams allowed, but staff can turn them away when it's crowded.
  • This was announced by the authority that runs the two Holy Mosques in 2024; we haven't seen an update since, so follow staff instructions on the day.

What works well for families

  • A baby carrier or sling for tawaf and sa'i.
  • A light folding pram for the hotel and streets, left at the hotel at peak times.
  • Take turns: one parent does tawaf while the other waits with the baby.
  • Go at quieter hours and agree a meeting point.

Next step: tell us your children's ages and we'll suggest hotels and timings that suit a young family.
