What if my period starts before or during Umrah?

Asked by Anonymous pilgrim23 Oct 2026Women's travel

In short

This is common and planned for. Most scholars teach that tawaf requires ritual purity, so a woman usually waits until her period ends to do tawaf, while making du'a and other worship meanwhile. Ask your scholar about your situation, and build spare days into your trip.

What scholars generally teach (please confirm with your own scholar)

  • Before ihram: a woman can still enter ihram at the miqat. Many scholars teach that she then waits in ihram until her period ends before doing tawaf.
  • Tawaf: most scholars hold that tawaf requires ritual purity, so it is delayed until after the period.
  • Sa'i: many scholars allow sa'i without ritual purity, but it normally follows tawaf.
  • Other worship: du'a, dhikr and other acts remain open to her.
  • Scholars differ on special cases — for example, when a flight home cannot be changed — so ask before you travel.

Planning that helps

  • Plan your dates around your expected cycle where you can, with spare days.
  • Medication to delay a period is a medical decision for your own doctor, not something to start on advice from a website.
  • Talk to your group leader privately; good organisers adjust plans quietly.

Next step: our women-friendly group departures include named women contacts in each city.
