Eid day, step by step
Eid al-Fitr is a day of thanks for completing the month. The Qur'an (2:185) asks us to complete the number of days and glorify Allah for having guided us, which is why many say the takbir on the way to the prayer.
A simple Eid morning, following the sunnah:
1. Make sure Zakat al-Fitr is paid (Abu Dawud 1609).
2. Eat a few dates before leaving. A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari (953) says the Prophet ﷺ didn't go out on Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates, an odd number.
3. Go to the Eid prayer, saying the takbir.
4. Pray and listen to the khutbah.
5. Come back by a different route. A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari (986) says the Prophet ﷺ did this on Eid.
6. Visit family, friends and neighbours.
No fasting on Eid day: a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari (1990) says the Prophet ﷺ forbade fasting on the two days of Eid.
