Ramadan Ready · World 1
Before Ramadan
Get ready before Ramadan (Ramzan) begins: a health check before fasting, planning your month, the food and money traps, Zakat and Sadaqah planning, and a plan for the whole family.
The weeks before Ramadan are when the big things are easiest to arrange: a doctor's check, leave from work, a realistic plan, and who does what at home.
Before Ramadan walks through each of these in short levels, so the month starts calm.

A health check before you fast
Most healthy adults fast without trouble. Some people need a plan from their doctor first, and the time to make it is before Ramadan, not on the first morning.
- Talk to your doctor first if you have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure or another long-term condition, if you take medicines at set times, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Diabetes needs the earliest start. The IDF-DAR Diabetes and Ramadan guidelines advise a check 6 to 8 weeks before Ramadan. The plan should cover blood sugar checks, any changes to medicines, and when to break the fast.
- Never change medicines on your own. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take them between Iftar and Suhoor.
Islam does not ask anyone to harm themselves. The Qur'an (2:184-185) allows people who are ill to miss fasts and make up the same number of days later, and says Allah intends ease, not hardship. Who counts as ill, and what to do instead, is covered in World 2. For your own case, ask your doctor about your health and a scholar you trust about the ruling.
