A pilgrim who cannot walk long distances can still complete Umrah. Inside Masjid al-Haram you can perform tawaf and sa'i in a manual wheelchair pushed by a family member or an authorised pusher, or on an electric cart where the service is running. Book airline wheelchair assistance when you buy your ticket, choose a hotel with a short, level route to the Haram, and tell us about the mobility need at enquiry so transfers and rooms are planned around it. Pusher and cart charges can be paid directly at the Haram on the day, or pre-booked and prepaid with Marhaba Haji; charges change by season, so we confirm the current amount before you travel.
Reviewed by our team — always confirm current official rules.
- Tawaf and sa'i can be performed seated — in a wheelchair or on an electric cart — when walking is difficult.
- Use only wheelchairs, pushers and carts provided or authorised by the Haram services; avoid unlicensed pushers outside the gates.
- Ask the airline for wheelchair assistance when you book, not at the airport.
- A manual folding wheelchair normally travels free as a mobility aid; powered chairs have battery rules that vary by airline.
- Hotel distance and a level, step-free route matter more than star rating for a wheelchair user.
- Tick 'Wheelchair / mobility assistance needed' on our enquiry form so our operations team plans around it.
In this Guide
Crowds are thinner late at night and mid-morning outside Fridays and peak seasons. A calmer hour makes pushing a wheelchair far easier and safer for everyone.
Manual wheelchairs at the Haram
Wheelchairs are available at Masjid al-Haram in Makkah and Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah through the official Haram services. Collection points, deposit or ID practice and return rules are set by the authorities and change between seasons, so ask at the service desks when you arrive or ask our ground team the day before.
Wheelchair users are usually directed to designated routes and upper levels for tawaf and to a separate lane for sa'i. Paths are longer than the ground floor, so allow extra time.
Tawaf EV and Sa'i EV: electric carts
Electric carts — often called Tawaf EV or Sa'i EV — carry seated pilgrims around tawaf on a designated floor and along the sa'i between Safa and Marwah. They suit pilgrims who can sit unaided but cannot walk or be pushed for the full distance.
Availability, booking method, operating hours and charges are set by the Haram operators and change with the season and crowd levels. We do not print a price we cannot stand behind: our ground team confirms the current process and charge before your Umrah day.
Pushers and porters
If no family member can push for the whole tawaf and sa'i, use an authorised pusher. Agree the charge before you start and keep your belongings with you. Avoid people offering services outside the gates without identification.
You have two ways to pay for pushers and electric carts. Pay directly at the Haram on the day, or pre-book them with Marhaba Haji and prepay, so assistance is arranged before you leave home. Either way, tell us at enquiry and our ground team coordinates the timing with your Umrah.
Flying from India with your own wheelchair
Request wheelchair assistance when you book. Airlines use codes such as WCHR (can walk short distances and climb steps, needs help over distance), WCHS (cannot climb steps) and WCHC (cannot walk at all and needs help to the seat). Ask for assistance on arrival at Jeddah or Madinah too.
A manual folding wheelchair is normally carried free as a mobility aid and can often be used to the aircraft door. Powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters have battery rules — lithium batteries may need removing and carrying in the cabin — and usually require advance notice. Rules vary by airline: confirm at booking and get it in writing.
On the Haramain high-speed train, manual wheelchairs are permitted and are stowed in the luggage area of the coach.
Hotels, rooms and transfers
Choose a hotel with a short, level route to the Haram and reliable lifts. Ask for an accessible room in writing; we confirm room type, lift access and drop-off point with the hotel before you pay.
Our private car transfers can carry a folded manual wheelchair. Larger vans suit a family travelling with a chair and luggage — tell us at enquiry so we send the right vehicle.
If you prefer not to fly with a chair, buying an inexpensive manual chair in Makkah or Madinah is common, and many families donate it before they leave.
