Harab Rasheed
Short answer: be in ihram before your plane crosses the miqat — that is before Jeddah, not at Jeddah airport.
Why: pilgrims coming from India approach Makkah through the miqat zones to the east and south-east (commonly referred to as Qarn al-Manazil and Yalamlam). Planes cross these points in the air, before landing at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. The widely followed position is that a pilgrim intending Umrah must not pass the miqat without ihram.
How Indian pilgrims usually do it
- Men: put on the ihram cloths at home, at the departure airport, or on the plane before the miqat (changing on the plane is hard, so most dress beforehand). Do not make the intention yet if you don't want the restrictions to start early.
- Women: wear modest everyday clothing; no special garment is needed.
- Make the intention when the crew announces the miqat (many airlines flying to Jeddah do this). If unsure, make it a little early rather than late.
If you fly to Madinah first, you don't need ihram on the flight. You enter ihram later, at Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali), when you travel from Madinah to Makkah.
If you crossed the miqat without ihram by mistake, scholars give guidance on what to do — ask your scholar before you begin tawaf.
