The Rites
Rehearse each step of your Umrah in order — ihram and the miqat, tawaf, sa'i and halq or taqsir — and what to do when plans change.
The biggest fear for a first-timer is doing a rite wrong. The Rites lets you put each step in order, practise what to do when something unexpected happens, and learn the core duas at your own pace.
Every step here is checked against a published official guide and approved by our team before it is published. We don't issue rulings: where scholars differ, we say so.

A taste of this World
Ihram begins at the miqat
Umrah begins with ihram, and ihram begins at the miqat: the boundary points set before Makkah.
- The Ministry's Ihram guide says it is Sunnah to perform ghusl and apply fragrance before entering ihram, and to begin ihram after a prayer.
- At the miqat you make the intention and say "Labbayka Allahumma Umrah", then recite the Talbiyah.
- Flying to Jeddah, you make the intention and wear ihram on the plane, when it's announced that the aircraft is passing the miqat.
- A pilgrim coming from outside may not pass the miqat without ihram.
You can use the Miqat calculator on our site to see where your flight crosses it.
