Do Your Documents Agree With Each Other? — Verified practical guidance by Marhaba Haji
Essential Takeaways at a Glance
  • Your passport is the master copy: visa, tickets, hotel bookings and certificates should match it exactly.
  • On a single-name passport, ask the airline and visa provider how to enter the name, never invent a surname, and use one format everywhere.
  • Fingerprint scans can fail on worn, cut or henna-marked fingertips, which often affects older pilgrims and manual workers.
  • India is not currently on Saudi Arabia's list for Umrah-visa fingerprints; if your application asks, enrol through Saudi Visa Bio before paying for non-refundable fares.
  • Fix passport problems before booking: changing a passport later means changing every booking.

Most document problems on an Umrah trip are not about a missing document. They are about documents that disagree with each other: a name spelled one way on the passport and another on the ticket, an initial expanded on one form and not on another, or fingerprints that a scanner cannot read.

Each of these is easy to fix at home and stressful to fix at an airport counter. This guide shows what to check, and in what order, before you pay for anything.

Name consistency across passport, ticket and visa

Your passport is the master copy. Every other document should match it exactly: the same spelling, the same order and the same split between given name and surname.

That includes:

  • Your Saudi visa. Applications should use your name exactly as it appears in the passport. When the visa arrives, check your full name, passport number, nationality and dates against the passport before you fly.
  • Your air tickets. Your name is checked against your passport at check-in, at boarding and at immigration. A ticket that does not match can mean a correction fee, a reissued ticket or, at worst, being refused boarding.
  • Hotel and Nusuk bookings. Every night of an Umrah stay is booked through Nusuk Masar before the visa is issued, and those bookings carry your name too.
  • Vaccination certificates, insurance and any other document you will show on the trip.

Common mismatches among Indian travellers:

  • Single-name passports. Many Indian passports show a given name with no surname, or a surname with no given name. Airlines and visa systems handle this in different ways: some repeat the name in both fields, others use a placeholder. Do not invent a surname. Ask the airline and your visa provider how they want it entered, before you pay, and use the same format everywhere.
  • Initials. If your name is written with initials at home ("K. Abdul Rahman") but spelled out in the passport, use the passport version on every booking.
  • Spelling variants. Mohammed, Mohammad, Muhammad: pick the one in your passport, not the one on your Aadhaar or your bank account.
  • Names changed after marriage. If you use a married name, it must be the name in your current passport. If your passport still shows your earlier name, book in that name, or update the passport first.
  • Given name and surname swapped. Booking forms put fields in different orders. Check which box is which before you type.

For families, check every traveller's details together. A family booking often goes wrong because one person's name, date of birth or passport number was copied from an old document.

Fingerprint readiness for elderly and manual workers

Saudi Arabia does not currently ask every Umrah applicant for fingerprints. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah lists the countries where fingerprint registration for electronic Umrah visas has started: the United Kingdom, Tunisia, Kuwait, Bangladesh and Malaysia. India is not on that list as of October 2026, but Saudi Arabia can add countries, and other visa types have their own rules, so follow whatever your application asks.

Where biometrics are requested, the official Saudi Visa Bio app records your fingerprints and a facial image on your phone. If it cannot read them, you may be directed to a visa centre. This section is for pilgrims who are asked.

Fingerprint scanners struggle with some hands, and the people most affected are often older pilgrims and those who work with their hands: farmers, builders, cooks, tailors and others whose fingertips are worn smooth over the years. India's own Aadhaar authority recognises that fingerprints can wear out with age.

To give the scan the best chance:

  • Avoid henna and other markings on the fingertips before enrolment. Visa authorities advise that fingertips should be free of decoration, cuts and abrasions.
  • Wait for small cuts to heal where you can, rather than enrolling with a bandaged finger.
  • Look after your hands in the days before. Dry, cracked skin can make prints harder to read.
  • Use good light and a steady surface when enrolling on a phone, and enrol each traveller on their own, one at a time.
  • Try again calmly. Clean and dry the finger and the phone's camera or sensor, and retry.
  • If the app still cannot read the prints, go to a visa centre. Do this early, not in the last week before travel.
  • If fingerprints genuinely cannot be taken, for example because of an injury or a medical condition, ask your visa provider what the current procedure is. Requirements vary, and some processes ask for a medical certificate.

Keep the confirmation screen once enrolment succeeds: you may be asked for it later in the application.

What to fix before you book

Work through this list before paying for flights, hotels or a package:

  1. Check passport validity. Your passport should be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Renew it first if it is not.
  2. Settle your name. Decide exactly how your name will be written, matching the passport, including how a single name is entered. Write it down and share it with whoever books for you.
  3. Update the passport if needed. If your passport shows an old name or a mistake, correct it before booking. Changing a passport later means changing every booking.
  4. Check every traveller. Compare each family member's name, date of birth and passport number against their own passport, not a photocopy.
  5. If biometrics are requested, do them early. Complete Saudi Visa Bio enrolment, or book a visa centre appointment, before paying for non-refundable fares.
  6. Check the visa when it arrives. Name, passport number, nationality and dates. Ask for any mismatch to be corrected before you fly.
  7. Check the tickets. Confirm the name on each ticket against the passport the moment the booking is made, when corrections are usually simplest.

Our Umrah visa guides explain which documents each visa needs, and why Umrah visas get refused, including name mismatches.

Frequently asked questions

01Does the name on my ticket need to match my passport exactly?
Yes. Your ticket is checked against your passport at check-in, at boarding and at immigration. Use the exact spelling and order in your passport, and check each ticket as soon as it is booked.
02My passport has only one name. How do I book a ticket and visa?
Airlines and visa systems handle single names differently. Ask the airline and your visa provider how they want it entered before you pay, never invent a surname, and use the same format on every document.
03My name is spelled differently on my Aadhaar and my passport. Which do I use?
Your passport. Every travel document for the trip, including the visa, tickets and hotel bookings, should match the passport exactly.
04Do Indians need fingerprints for a Saudi Umrah visa?
Not as a rule at present. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah lists the countries where fingerprint registration for electronic Umrah visas has started (the UK, Tunisia, Kuwait, Bangladesh and Malaysia), and India is not on that list as of October 2026. If your application does ask, use the official Saudi Visa Bio app.
05Why won't the Saudi Visa Bio app read my fingerprints?
Worn, dry, cut or henna-marked fingertips can be hard to scan, which often affects older people and those who work with their hands. Clean and dry your finger and the phone, try again in good light, and if it still fails, go to a visa centre.
06What should I check when my Umrah visa arrives?
Your full name, passport number, nationality and visa dates, against your passport. Ask for any mismatch to be corrected before you fly.
